My earlier comment did not apply to Ver 3. This replaces it.

The pictures you select show as thumbnails in the tray where they can be manipulated. Hovering the mouse pointer over the icons to the right of the thumbnails tells you what can be done. Clicking the down arrow of the bottom left icon lets you choose an album in which to place the selection or to create a new album.
Selection is the same as always, to select all files in a folder Ctrl-A, a group, L click first, use scroll bar if the last is not showing, then hold shift key down while you L click last, individual files, hold Ctrl key down while you L click each.
Hope this helps

An understanding of Picasa 3 may be useful.
When you first install Picasa, it scans folders on your hard drive and displays a list of them in the left pane of its 3 pane window. Clicking on a folder shows the files it contains in the right pane. Clicking on a file or selecting several files, shows them in the bottom pane, the selection tray.
The files shown in folders and the folders themselves are not moved from your hard disk to Picasa nor are they copies of the files, but are unique to Picasa, similar but different, to the shortcuts which Windows and you use. If you R (right) click on one and select Properties you will see it refers to the hard disk file and not to itself as does a shortcut.
Changes, including deletion, editing, moving etc, made to them are also made to the files and folders on your hard disk. Picasa recognises this potential for disaster and asks for confirmation before doing anything. The file is "read-only" until you confirm.

Albums and the Pictures in Albums are quite different. They are much more like copies of the files on your hard disk. They exist only in Picasa, and what you do to them does not do anything to the files on your hard disk You create an album either before or during the placing of your selected pictures in it. A list of the Albums you create is displayed above the list of folders in the left pane and the pictures each contains appear in the right pane. The same picture may be placed in several albums; changing one does not affect the others.
