SERVICE PACK 3
I suppose its time to bite the bullet and have a crack at installing service pack 3 - can't keep it at arms length forever. I'm not so sure about the I E 7 upgrade that comes as part and parcel of it. Anybody had any issues that would warn me off doing the service pack install - or suggestions of how best to safely approach it apart from the obvious, such as backing up first? Do I have to disable a.v. program? Is there a clear tutorial that would help or is it a straightforward process? Any comments appreciated. Robert

Hello Robert
Good to see you here.
I googled {XP SP3 reviews}and got lots of opinions. One I thought worth reading was at http://tinyurl.com/cv3cgo
and was a bit like a tutorial.
Windows Secrets Newsletter always points out Windows' weaknesses. I couldn't get the relevant 2 on the web but could forward them if you wish.
If you don't use Erunt routinely to back up your registry, get and use it before installing SP3.
Hope this helps.
I have done quite a few machines now and not had major problems.
Sometimes it took a few restarts to straighten them out but worked.
There were issues with certain brand machines and processors. Just Google your brand of computer together with SP3 and that should give you your answers.
PCWorld magazine March 2009 p73 discusses Service Pack updates. Here is a summary.
1. Wait about 3 months, let others find any snags.
2. Check for hardware incompatibilities.
3. Scan for malware. use your own antivirus, program, then SuperAntiSpyware or MalwareBytes
4. Make an image backup Use True Image or Ghost
5. Close all applications before you start. Do nothing else until it is finished and rebooted.
Many thanks to all 3 posters. Your comments are really appreciated. I have flagged this job for a rainy day in the near future.
