A secure, spam-free mailer with easy mail and address book backup facilities is required.
Windows supplies a mailer, Outlook Express (OE), which is the one most widely used, but it's security and spam filters are not very good. There are other mailers, Thunderbird from Mozilla (the creators of Firefox) and in the pipeline, Penelope, a combination of Thunderbird and Eudora. More about Penelope at: http://tinyurl.com/y4qxje. Others are Pegasus Mail, Incredimail for the artistic and creative, the browser Opera's built in mailer, Eudora, and many more. Thunderbird may be best
Xtra is the most widely used ISP, but according to Consumer http://tinyurl.com/dxjgyb, it has the most dissatisfied customers. Inspire and Actrix rank best. Discussion on both Mailers and ISPs via Comments would be helpful. Click on Comments (just below and tiny!) to read more about this topic, Spam avoidance.

Avoiding Spam.
In addition you need at least 2 email addresses, one to restrict to trusted friends who never pass it on to anyone and one or more to hand out to anyone or any site. A gmail (www.gmail.com) second address is ideal. Gmail has an excellent spam filter, archives on the Net and will quickly find any mail you archive and will, if configured to do so, forward all mail to your secure address where it will be filtered again and then it will be read on your mailer and filtered (if your mailer will allow it) again. You only need to open one mailer and spam becomes a rarity.
